In short
Acronis Email Security is Acronis's email protection service, powered by Perception Point. It stops spam, phishing, business email compromise, account takeover, spoofing and malware for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Open-Xchange and other mailboxes. Microsoft 365 connects by API with no MX change, and it is managed and billed on usage in Acronis Cyber Platform.

What Acronis Email Security is
Acronis Email Security is a cloud email protection service sold as part of Acronis Cyber Platform, formerly Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. Acronis states that it is powered by Perception Point, whose detection engine scans every email, file and URL, and Acronis delivers it through its own console, licensing and support. You will still see the older name: Acronis's documentation for the service is titled Advanced Email Security, which is why people search for "Acronis Advanced Email Security" and "Acronis Perception Point email security". They are the same product.
Perception Point is now part of Fortinet, which sells its own version as FortiMail Workspace Security; our sister site's Perception Point guide covers that route. Acronis Email Security suits organisations that would rather keep email protection with the vendor that already looks after their backup, endpoint protection or Microsoft 365 data.
Acronis lists the threats it is built to stop as spam, phishing, business email compromise, email account takeover, spoofing, malware, zero-day attacks and advanced persistent threats, before they reach users.
How it protects your mail
Acronis describes Email Security as a set of protection layers that every message passes through:
| Layer | What it does |
|---|---|
| Spam filter and reputation | Filters bulk and unwanted mail using reputation and anti-spam engines |
| Threat intelligence | Combines several external threat intelligence sources with Perception Point's own engine, which scans URLs and files in the wild |
| Phishing and URL analysis | Checks links with reputation engines and uses image recognition to spot fake sign-in pages and brand impersonation |
| Anti-spoofing and BEC | Uses machine learning with IP reputation, SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks to catch payload-free impersonation, lookalike domains and display-name deception |
| Anti-evasion | Recursively unpacks content such as nested files and link chains so hidden payloads are checked |
| Antivirus | Signature-based engines for known malware |
| Next-generation dynamic scan | Acronis's CPU-level technology that looks for deviations from normal execution flow to stop zero-day exploits |
| Account takeover protection | Blocks credential phishing, watches for anomalous user behaviour and helps contain compromised accounts |
| Outbound scanning (Microsoft 365) | Scans mail leaving your Microsoft 365 mailboxes by API, so a compromised account cannot spread attacks to customers and suppliers |
Acronis says it scans all traffic, inbound and outbound, rather than a sample, analysing every email, file and URL. Administrators also get X-ray insights, forensic detail on each threat and the attack patterns targeting their organisation, and a full audit log of actions taken by administrators and the incident response team.

Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and other mailboxes
Acronis lists support for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Open-Xchange and other cloud-based or on-premises mailboxes, which is broader than most API-only products.
- Microsoft 365 connects through Microsoft's API. There is no MX record change and no appliance to host, so mail keeps flowing through Microsoft while Acronis inspects it.
- Google Workspace and other platforms are supported too; Acronis describes the deployment as cloud-native and integrated directly with the email system. We confirm the exact method for your platform before we start, because it affects how mail is routed.
- Open-Xchange and on-premises mail make Acronis an option for organisations that host their own mail or use a provider's hosted mailbox rather than Microsoft or Google.
Because it works alongside the protection built into your mail platform, it is worth configuring that first. Our guides to Microsoft 365 phishing protection and Google Workspace email security cover the built-in settings, and the integrated cloud email security explainer describes how API products sit after Microsoft's or Google's filtering.
The Acronis incident response service
A filtering product is only as good as the way its alerts and quarantine are handled. Acronis includes an incident response service with Email Security: Acronis's cyber analysts monitor traffic, analyse suspicious messages, handle false positives, remediate threats and release legitimate mail when required, with ongoing reporting.
That is Acronis's service, not ours, and its scope is set by Acronis. In practice it means fewer messages for your IT provider to triage by hand. We stay your point of contact for set-up, policy changes and licensing, and we agree with you how released and reported messages are handled.
Is Acronis Email Security the right fit for you?
We will check it against your systems and requirements and recommend the right option.
Acronis Protected 365 and the wider platform
Email Security is one of seven services Acronis groups as Acronis Protected 365, its protection for Microsoft 365:
| Protected 365 service | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Backup and recovery | Cloud-to-cloud backup of Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams |
| Email Security | The filtering service on this page |
| Collaboration Security | Dynamic file and URL scanning for Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive |
| Security Posture Management | Checks Microsoft 365 configuration for risky settings |
| Security Awareness Training | Training and phishing simulations for staff |
| Email Archiving | A searchable archive of mail |
| XDR integration | Email detections correlated with endpoint and identity alerts |
Each service can also be bought on its own, so you can start with email security and add backup or archiving later, or move to the full Acronis Protected 365 set. If you already use Acronis backup or other Cyber Platform services, Email Security is switched on in the console you already use rather than being a new vendor to onboard.
How Acronis Email Security is licensed
Acronis Email Security is a Cyber Platform cloud service. Through Forever Systems it is billed monthly on usage, so the cost follows the mailboxes you protect and falls when leavers are removed. Collaboration Security for Microsoft 365 is a separate option.
We confirm the exact licence metric, any minimum and how shared mailboxes are counted in your quote. Pricing depends on the options and numbers you choose, so ask us for a quote. The commercial detail is on our licensing site's Acronis Email Security licensing page.
Acronis Email Security or FortiMail Workspace Security?
Because both use Perception Point's technology, buyers often weigh the two routes against each other. The detection engine is not the deciding factor; the platform around it is:
| Acronis Email Security | FortiMail Workspace Security | |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor | Acronis, using Perception Point technology | Fortinet, which now owns Perception Point |
| Managed in | Acronis Cyber Platform, with backup and endpoint protection | Fortinet's own console |
| Mail platforms | Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Open-Xchange and other mailboxes | Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and other services |
| Beyond email | Collaboration Security for Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive (separate option) | Browser and collaboration components, deployable together or separately |
| Vendor service | Acronis incident response service | Fortinet includes a managed incident response service |
| Bundles | Part of Acronis Protected 365 | Sold as its own product |
If you already rely on Acronis for backup, keeping email protection in the same console and on the same usage-based bill is usually simpler. If browser security matters as much as email, the Fortinet route is worth comparing.
Who it suits and the alternatives
Acronis Email Security is a strong fit for:
- Acronis backup or Cyber Platform customers who want email protection in the same console and on the same invoice
- Mixed mail estates with Google Workspace, Open-Xchange or self-hosted mail alongside Microsoft 365
- Small IT teams that value a vendor incident response service handling false positives and releases
- Finance-heavy teams worried about invoice fraud and impersonation
If you want Perception Point's technology from Fortinet directly, with its browser and collaboration components, compare FortiMail Workspace Security. If you want an API product with collaboration coverage beyond Microsoft 365, compare Check Point Email Security. And if you need a gateway with continuity and encryption, look at Proofpoint Essentials. All of them are in our email security solutions comparison.
How we help
We can review your mail set-up and domain authentication, connect Acronis Email Security to Microsoft 365 or your other mail platform, tune policies and allow lists for legitimate senders such as finance systems, and agree how quarantine releases and user reports are handled. We can also adjust licence counts as your organisation changes.
